Grand Island Ninth Grader Honored for Dedication to Reading

Grand Island High School ninth grader Hadley Dahlgren has once again been recognized for her outstanding commitment to reading. Hadley recently received an award from Assemblyman Angelo Morinello (R, C- Niagara Falls) after successfully completing the New York State Assembly Summer Reading Challenge, marking her tenth consecutive year of earning this distinction.

To complete the challenge, students are asked to read for at least 15 minutes a day for 40 days during the summer months. For Hadley, it’s become a tradition—one she’s upheld every year since kindergarten.

“Reading has always been something I enjoy,” Hadley said. “It’s fun to look back and see how much I’ve grown as a reader since those early years.”

Assemblyman Morinello commended Hadley for her consistency and dedication, noting that her achievement sets a great example for younger students across the district.

“Ten years of participation is truly remarkable,” he said. “Hadley demonstrates that reading isn’t just an assignment—it’s a lifelong habit that opens doors.”

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages students across New York State to maintain their literacy skills and develop a love of reading outside the classroom. Hadley’s decade-long streak is a testament to her hard work and the supportive environment fostered by her family and teachers in the Grand Island Central School District.

As she begins her high school journey, Hadley says she has no plans to stop reading anytime soon—she’s already looking forward to next summer’s challenge.

Dahlgren said she's had a love for reading as far back as she can remember.
